Teaching YW to Cook

I have always been an advocate for having YW activities that teach our YW to cook.

I've had an interesting experience the past couple of months.  My oldest son is dating this amazing young lady.  She is a return missionary, cute, fun to be around, has a solid testimony of the gospel, and so much more.  We really enjoy having her around.

She does not know how to cook.  It is almost surprising to hear them communicate about cooking.  He cooks for her all the time (I taught all my kids how to cook - including my boys).  I overheard her say that she doesn't know how to cook Raman noodles.  Seriously?  I am quite shocked at the lack of cooking skills some young women have these days.  Eating out and buying already prepared meals is almost a curse these days.

This is why I am - and always will be - a huge advocate for teaching our YW how to cook.  Buying food that is already prepared or eating out is so easy these days.  Teaching YW simple skills like cooking will bless their lives in so many ways.

Need an activity idea that we have incorporated in my current ward?  We have 2 "feasts" per year.  Something in the Spring /Summer and one in the Fall (we call this one Fall Feast).  During this activity, we either make it all at the church, or have it in someone's home.  We always cook 4 items - main dish, bread, salad or side dish, dessert.  For example - this past October we made chili, corn bread, caramel apples and salad.  We divide our girls into groups - which with each group will make one dish for all the YW.  Then we come together and have a "feast" of the foods they all made.  Our YW really love these activities.  They go home with all the recipes.  Our classes also have additional cooking activities throughout the year.

I know that our YW are being blessed by the skills we are teaching them.  They have learned skills like how to read a recipe, how to mix, stir, fold, beat, etc.  They have learned the simple knowledge of preheating an oven.

I firmly believe that getting back to basics - per say - is so important.  We can't just assume they are being taught at home.  Because from my experience - some are - but most aren't.

You can find SO MANY ideas and recipes online that can easily be done in your activity time.  Or, pull out your cookbooks and favorite recipes and share them with the YW whom you serve.

Make Mormon Messages

This was a fun activity!  We let our youth (we did this with the young men) know a couple weeks ahead of time that we would be making Mormon Messages.  We had 3 groups: Beehives & Deacons, Mia Maids & Teachers, Laurels & Priests.  They were responsible to get together and make a plan ahead of time.  On the night of the activity, we had 3 camera people set up (adults in the ward) to record what they had planned.  It took a good 1.5 hours to get these recorded.  The youth then coordinated with the camera person who recorded their video to do any editing they wanted to do to get the finished product.

We had this activity in November.  In January we always have a CYM/YW activity of an etiquette dinner.  We showed these at this dinner as the entertainment.   The Laurels/Priest one was by far the best (they did a bad date - good date scenario and based it on the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet).

This activity does take planning, and some commitment from the youth, but we found that most of our youth really enjoyed making these.

**I would post one of these so you can see it, but we have individuals in our ward who do not want these shown online, so I can't.  But believe me - they were fun.

That's My Mom!

This is a great Mother’s Day Activity.

Play the game "That's my Mom".  Each girl gets a sign that says “That’s My Mom!”.  This can be as simple as it written on a piece of paper.  The girls sit in the front of the room (or in a big circle next to their mom’s), their mothers are the audience.  Someone reads a sentence like: “This Mom use to be a race car driver” or “This Mom’s favorite TV show is...., “ or “This Mom's favorite meal is lasagna”, etc... If the girls think this is their mom,  they raise their sign up & get a point if they are right. Talk with all the moms beforehand and try to get little known things about the mothers to make it somewhat difficult for the girls.  You could end with each girl sharing one thing they love about their mom.  This is a fun way to get to know each other better and to show love for each other.  You could then give a little gift to the winner (maybe a gift card to your local ice cream place), and something smaller to everybody else. (Thanks, Tabitha, for this great idea!)

Freezer Meals

In my ward we have had several families who have needed service.  Mainly in the form of food.  The RS has decided to take these families freezer meals.  They can pull one out whenever it is needed.  This has been so successful!

As a young women group, we decided to use some of our activities to make freezer meals and then take them to the RS compassionate service leader.  She has a freezer she keeps them in, and when one is needed, it's ready to be delivered.

As many of you know, my dad passed away in August.  Since this time, we (my siblings and I) have needed to clean out his house and get it up for sale.  Since I work from home, I have been the one to do most of this.  I can more easily free up my schedule and head to southern California a lot easier than anybody else.  Because of this, the RS in my ward stepped in and had a couple freezer meals brought to my home.  I put them in the freezer for when they were most needed.

My husband has come with me several times to help at my dad's house - it's amazing how much faster things go with more than one person there.  This last time we went to finish up the packing, I left somewhat quickly.  I didn't have time to get all the groceries bought for my kids who would be home without me for a few days.

It was such a blessing to have those freezer meals.  They had a lasagna all prepared for them to have as Sunday dinner.  I didn't even think that these freezer meals would come in so handy, but what a wonderful thing it was to have them!

Service - you may not always know when you will have a chance to give it.  You never know when you will be the one receiving it.  Either way, it is a blessing that you will see right away, or look back on and realize.

Your Ward's Online Directory

Have you updated your information on your Ward's online directory?  Have you added pictures of your family, too?  If not, you may want to.  If you're particular about who views your information (address, phone, email, picture, etc...) you can set the viewing setting to private.  Or you can set it to just your ward, or to your whole stake.  I like how my kids cell phone #'s can be on their own profile so leaders who need to contact them, can do so directly.

Did you know you can view other families in your ward's directory online?  Did you know you can view pictures of your ward members online?  Even view your stake members?

Simply log into your account at and then click on Directory in the drop down menu under your name.

Have you ever wondered who someone was who just got called to a position and you didn't recognize the name?  This has helped me in new callings - I can see who I will be teaching and this helps me remember who they are.  This is also just fun to see your ward friends.  I love how this helps make your ward a little more personal to you.

This would be a fun mutual activity to help your YW update their information.  They would need to have an account, or you can help those that don't already have one, get one.  (Of course, they would need to be sure their parents are okay with that).

Box Lunch Social with YM

This is a fun activity to do with the Laurels/Priests.  It's called Box Lunch Social.  Have each girl bring a sack lunch, pizza, or whatever, for two. The boys earn "money" by answering trivia questions (they each can start with $50 in case they don't answer any questions).  The leaders then auction off the baskets one at a time - not knowing who's box lunch is who's.  Then the boy, and the girl who brought that box lunch, eat it together.  You may have to pair up girls to bring items if there are more girls than boys, and visa versa. (Thanks for the idea, Stacie S.)

Marshmallow Guns

Need a fun activity - but one that the YW will use again when they have children?  Make Marshmallow Guns! You can search the internet for several ways of how to make these.  There really are no set measurements.  You can simply use a plain 12-inch piece of PVC pipe if you wanted to make a real simple one. You will need 1/2 inch PVC pipe, though, no matter the design.  This would also make a great activity for a group date.  Whatever you plan with these, and with whomever - just be sure to have A LOT of mini marshmallows.  I am talking at least 3-4 bags.  They go quickly.

*I wonder if you could use other items besides marshmallows for indoor play - maybe cotton balls cut into fourths?  Maybe tiny pom-poms? I don’t know, what do you think - have you used other items?*

Call for religious pictures

** All photos must be submitted no later than Oct 18, 2014 **

I am creating posters for the 2015 monthly themes for Primary.  I am in search of pictures for 12 different "sub-themes".  I want to use real pictures from real people who share my beliefs.  The themes are listed below.

If you are a photographer, professional or amateur, and are willing to submit photos to be used, please do.  I am going for a variety of children/people shown each month.  Here are the details of this process:

1.  I will pay you $10 if we use your photo for any given month.  This will be the ONLY compensation you will receive for use of your picture.  Your name will not be published with these prints.

2.  Photos must be high resolution, as these will be used for a poster size print - up to 18"x24".

3.  By submitting a photo, you agree to allow us to use them in our 2015 Primary theme prints, which we will be selling to people as a finished, flattened digital poster file via Etsy, for them to download and print, and hang in their Primary room.  If you do not want your picture used in this way by others, please do not submit a photo.  You will not receive any further compensation for your photo, but the $10 as stated in #1 above.  (You will be emailed an agreement that you will sign stating these terms, and mail back to us before we use your photo).

4.  This is a chance for you to have your work published, and to see it being used for good.

5.  If you take a picture of people (a child helping a grandparent, etc...) this must be YOUR CHILD or a child with whom you have permission from their parents to use in your picture, and they agree to have me use the photo for our purpose.

6.  I am looking for nice, staged photos.  This doesn't mean if you have a precious picture depicting one of the themes that was not staged, we don't want it.  This means we want good quality pictures. Not just a snapshot of something.

If you're ready to submit a photo, please see the themes below and submit your photo.

EMAIL your high resolution photos to me at:  Please tell us which theme you think your photo is best depicting.  If you prefer, you can mail me a CD of your picture.  Email me for mailing address.

Here are the THEMES we are looking to portray in photos:

1.  We Believe in God the Eternal Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ

2.  Jesus Christ Is My Savior and Redeemer

3.  God Speaks through Prophets

4.  Jesus Christ Restored the Fulness of the Gospel through Joseph Smith

5.  Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel Lead Me to Jesus Christ

6.  The Holy Ghost Testifies of the Truth of All Things

7.  I Can Follow Jesus Christ’s Example

8.  Jesus Christ Is the Son of God, and He Is a God of Miracles

9.  I Obey Jesus Christ Because I Love Him

10.  The Mission of the Church Is to Invite All to Come unto Christ

11.  When We Serve Others, We Serve God

12.  I Know That My Redeemer Lives

13.  I Know My Savior Lives

We need all photos submitted NO LATER than Oct 18, 2014.

Email with any questions.  I look forward to seeing your work, and using them to bless so many Primary children throughout next year.

Come, Follow Me DVD's

The Church has now made many of the Come, Follow Me lesson supplement videos available on DVD's.  You won't have to download as many now, to show them.  You will need to log into your account to order them, but HERE IS THE LINK.  It says Volume 1 on the cover, so as more videos are made, I'm sure more Volumes will be created.  What a wonderful resource to use not only in our church classrooms, but at home!

2015 Mutual Theme Idea

I need your opinion.  I am thinking of doing my line of products this year for the 2015 Mutual Theme (Embark in the service of God) as NAUTICAL themed.  Boat, anchor, etc...

Do you like this idea?  I really like the symbolism of Embark with a ship/boat.  What do you think?

Comment your thoughts below.

My Dad's Passing

If you have wondered where I have been, or why your orders have been delayed in shipping, or why emails aren't being replied to, here is why.  My dad passed away on August 25, 2014.  To read about this experience, go to my other BLOG HERE.

I am almost caught up on things, and hoping I can get back to "normal operations" soon.

God and Growth

I read this morning on a friend's blog that - God cares more about our growth than our comfort.  It took me a minute to really understand what she meant.  Once I realized it - WOW!  What a powerful and true statement.

Let me share one personal experience that this applies to SO much with me.  I stutter.  Most people know this.  I am not comfortable reading a scripture in Gospel Doctrine class - or any class for that matter.  I remember being a teenager and literally leaving a class if - part of the lesson - we were going around the room each taking a turn reading a scripture.  Really!  I would "go to the bathroom" or whatever I could think of to get out of this.

As I grew up and spoke in Sacrament Meeting more often, I came to this profound realization - although I could never put words to explain my experience until this morning.  God cares more about our growth than our comfort.  And turning weaknesses into strengths - you better believe it.  I give great talks, devotionals, and firesides.  This is because I had to do hard things and I grew because of them.  And outgrew my weaknesses by leaving my comfort zone.  I still stutter, but I don't let this hold me back.

Now I actually love speaking in Sacrament Meeting.  I love giving prayers in class.  I still am not too keen on reading scriptures in a class, but if called upon, I will. (Reading tends to really emphasis a stutter - I do not read any talk I am giving.  I simply memorize it, and look at reminder notes).

I do know that God cares more about our growth than our comfort.  I live this statement daily.  What a wonderful blessing it is to know this and to know I am growing because of my trials.

2015 Young Women Leader Planning Calendar

It's here!  Our 2015 Young Women Leader Planning Calendar is in production.  We love the whole new design on the inside pages.  And thanks to lots of feed back, the cover is what it is.

You can pre-order it now, but it won't ship until September.  Not sure of an exact date, but most likely towards the end of September.  But the sooner you order - the better.  We will ship them in the order we receive the orders, so if it's anything like last year, it takes us about a week and a half to ship all the pre-orders out.  Yes - these are that popular.  (If you are ordering other items with these pre-order calendars, they will ship WHEN THE CALENDAR SHIPS.  So, if you need other items now, order them separately then the pre-orders for the calendar.)

We are having these bound the same way as in previous years.  Spiral bound or you can also order them 3-hole punched (no spiral binding).  Pre-order yours today.  And don't forget to get one for each of your presidency members!!
