Teaching YW about tools

In today's crafty society, it is a wise idea to teach young women about tools. This would make a great class activity. You may want to see if it can be applied to any of the PP goals your girls are working on, or need to work on - maybe about learning a new skill. It may also be something that one young woman may need to pursue a career or hobby that can earn income one day for herself or future family.

Simply bring a box of tools - include hand tools (hammer, pliers, file, wrench, c-clamps, etc...) and power tools (palm sander, drill, etc...). Have the girls, one at a time, pull a tool out of the box, and tell about that tool if they can - if not, you can tell about it's functions and purpose. Include in the box some safety equipment for working with tools - eye protection, ear (sound) protection, and work gloves.

Here is a little tool safety quiz - throughout the activity, teach tool safety, then give them this quiz to see if they were listening.

You may want to follow up with your next activity being a craft that they have to build. You can find several ideas online - just search for easy wood projects, or kids wood crafts, etc...

You may want to take it one step further, and plan a visit to someones home that may have a lot of power tools and have a mini class on how to use a table saw, drill press, router, etc...

CES Be Smart Firesides - AMAZING!!

If you've never been to - or even heard - of these firesides, it's about time you went to one! These firesides are put on by the CES department at BYU (aka the church). What they are - are representatives from every church-owned school comes together for a night, educating the youth in an area about all of their schools and all the options LDS youth have in choosing a church-owned school to attend. Sound boring? It's not! They have FuN! They will have kids come up to answer random questions, or shout something out when a certain symbol appears on a Powerpoint presentation, etc. These kids who participate in these questions get free school t-shirts, and things. The kids love it.

These firesides are for all youth, their parents, and youth leaders. Attend with your child who is between the ages of 12-18. Make sure their youth leaders are there as well.

You can find out more information about the BE SMART program, here. For the list of upcoming firesides in September and October 2011 (there may be one in your area) click here. If you are one of the lucky ones who have a fireside even remotely close to you - it will be well worth your time to go to it.

Want updated YW Lessons??

So, I hear all the time how outdated the Young Women lesson manuals are. I must admit - some of the stories in the lessons are a bit dated - I remember one about curlers being worn in public. It cracked me up even as a teenager in the Young Women program.

Well, at the last YW leader training in SLC they did mention that they are in the process of updating them - and to be patient. It is a lengthy process.

But in the meantime (and I think this will be a permanent resource) they have lesson manual resource guides. And online, they have resources that are even more current than those. If you go to the YW page on the Church website, and get to the lesson resources/manual page, and click on the manual and lesson you need to teach, on the right hand side, they have links to all the most current articles, talks, training, videos, etc... pertaining to that particular lesson topic. Use these! Especially the videos the Church produces for the youth. They are wonderful and just what our youth need to be hearing and seeing. Don't use these videos as the lesson, use them to supplement the lesson. Good luck! You'll have a great lesson planned in no time - that your young women can relate to!
